The 11th Encounter of Music and Academy
will be held July 1– 27

Santander, May 30, 2011.- Francisco Javier López Marcano, Counselor of Culture, Tourism and Sports of the Government of Cantabria and Paloma O’Shea, President of the Albéniz Foundation and Director of the Encounter of Music and Academy presented last May 16 at the Cantabria Palace of Festivals the Santander Encounter of Music and Academy. Cantabria 2011. Other personalities also in attendance were: Rosa Eva Diaz Tezanos, Counselor of Education of the Government of Cantabria; Íñigo de la Serna, Mayor of Santander; Antonio González, Director of the Santander Center of Musical Studies and Péter Csaba, Artistic Director of the Encounter.

The Encounter of Music and Academy was implemented in 2001 by the Albéniz Foundation and celebrates this year its eleventh edition. Since then, it is a pioneer educational and artistic activity in Spain that combines the organization of master classes by important maestros in each instrument as well as chamber music with the celebration of concerts throughout Cantabria. From July 1st to the 27th, the Encounter will gather in Santander young talented musicians from across Europe who, for a month, will work and share the classrooms and stages with twelve maestros of international prestige.

This year, the students participating in the Encounter have been selected from the following institutions: Royal College of Music (London), Royal Academy of Music (London), Conservatoire ational Supérieure de Musique et de Danse (Paris), Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler (Berlin), Karajan Orchester Akademie (Berlin), Universität der Künste (Berlin), Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music (Budapest), Academy of Performing Arts (Prague), Sibelius Academy (Helsinki), International Institute of Chamber Music (Madrid) and Reina Sofía School of Music (Madrid).

The Jesús de Monasterio Conservatory in Santander shall accommodate during the month of July the master classes by musicians of the highest level: Zakhar Bron and Silvia Marcovici (violin), Wolfram Christ (viola), Ivan Monighetti (violoncello), Felix Renggli (flute), Hansjörg Schellenberger (oboe), Klaus Thunemann (bassoon), Radovan Vlatkovic (horn), Galina Eguiazarova and Claudio Martínez Mehner (piano). Péter Csaba, Artistic Director of the Encounter and Fabián Panisello shall conduct the orchestras and the ensemble to be formed during the Encounter, respectively.

In the afternoon/evening over fifty concerts will be held in Santander and in other twenty-five places throughout Cantabria in important and varied scenarios, including theaters and churches, the Cantabria Palace of Festivals or the Palacio de la Magdalena. It will be a grand musical fiesta that will officially open on July 8 at the Argenta Hall of the Palace of Festivals with the Encounter’s Freixenet Orchestra under the baton of Maestro Péter Csaba.The music to be enjoyed during these concerts will encompass works of the baroque repertoires, essential pieces of 20th Century pieces and, very especially, programs that will underline the celebrations of two great composers : the bicentennial of Franz Liszt birth (1817-1886) and the centennial of the death of Gustav Mahler (1860-1911).

Once again, the Encounter fully participates in www.classicalplanet.com a website for classical music developed by the Albéniz Foundation by means of live broadcasting of the concerts to be held at the Argenta and Pereda Halls at the Palace of Festivals and the incorporation of www.magistermusicae.com to the master classes to be taught by the maestros.

The Encounter enjoys the collaboration of numerous governmental and private institutions and, very especially, the important support of the Government of Cantabria.
