Bucharest City Hall through ARCUB reveals the date for the fifth edition of Spotlight – the International Light Festival, which will take place between the 18th and the 21st of April, on Victoriei Avenue (from the Romanian Athenaeum to the Square of the United Nations). The artistic director of this year’s edition is Jean-François Zurawik, the director and producer of Fête des Lumières – Lyon. Spotlight 2019 will mark two major events of the year: the Romanian Presidency of the Council of the European Union and the opening of the Romania-France Season in Bucharest, events which will be reflected in the theme of this year’s edition, entitled: EuropeLights.

Thus the theme of this edition – EuropeLights – celebrates the role Romania is playing in Europe throughout this period by capturing a series of European identity relevant characteristics translated into light installations created by local and international artists.

Call for Projects – “Digital Europe. Europe of the Future”

In this context, Spotlight is launching a call for projects intended for young, emerging artists, architects, and designers, with the theme “Digital Europe. The Europe of the Future”. The call for projects invites the participants to propose interactive artistic light-based installations, which should explore at least one of the following aspects: “What Will Europe Look Like in the Future?”, “How Does One Translate Europe into the Digital Language ?”, “Analogue versus Digital – Yesterday’s and Today’s Europe.”

The call for projects is meant to provide young artists with a platform through which they can make themselves known and to identify the most creative projects in the drafting stage, projects based on light and on light-based technologies, with an emphasis on interactivity and on the public’s interaction with the work.

The deadline for the application is the 10th of March 2019. The winner will be announced on the 15th of March 2019 and will receive a 1.000 euros prize, as well as a budget of maximum 5.000 euros for the production of the installation. The winning project will be exhibited as part of the fifth edition of Spotlight - the International Light Festival in the pedestrian area behind Kretzulescu Church.
