În contextul expoziției internaționale Good Girls Memory Desire Power prezentată la MNAC în perioada 20 iunie – 29 septembrie 2013, curatoare Bojana Pejic și  Olivia Nițiș, artista Martha Wilson va participa la Simpozionul internațional Good Girls – Practicing Feminism Here and Now care va avea loc la MNAC în zilele de 27 și 28 septembrie. Cu acest prilej Universitatea Națională de Arte este onorată să găzduiască un lecture al artistei la data de 2 octombrie 2013.

Prezența Marthei Wilson in România se datorează sprijinului Ambasadei Statelor Unite ale Americii.

Această prezentare arhivează etapele interconectate ale contribuțiilor creative ale Marthei Wilson în contextul începuturilor practicilor feministe și angajate social din atelier, precum și difuzarea activității celor cu viziuni similare sub auspiciile Franklin Furnace. Centrală în discuție este prezența Marthei Wilson ca un agent de schimbare, inițial în opera proprie și apoi prin facilitarea schimbului cultural prin cordonarea directorială în cadrul Franklin Furnace. Selecția a 30 de proiecte din cei 30 de ani de activitate la Franklin Furnace constituie un auto-portret din modul în care pune în evidență lucrările care sunt istoric semnificative prin impingerea limitelor în cadrul practicilor de expunere precum și al societății în general.

Martha Wilson (n. 1947) este o artistă feministă de pionierat și director de galerie, care în ultimele patru decenii, a produs lucrări inovatoare de fotografie si video care explorează subiectivitatea feminină prin jocuri de rol, transformări de costum, și "invazii" de tip persona. Stimată pentru activitatea artistică și pentru eforturile sale de a susține formele creative care sunt "vulnerabilie din cauza neglijentei instituționale, naturii lor efemere, sau conținutului politic nepopular," ea a fost descrisă de criticul Holland Cotter în New York Times, ca una dintre " primii șase cei mai importanți oameni pentru artă din centrul Manhattan-ului în anii 1970. " În 1976 a fondat Franklin Furnace, un artist-run space, care susține explorarea, promovarea și păstrarea cărților de artist, instalațiilor temporare, artei performance, precum și lucrărilor on-line. Aceste forme contemporane de avangardă artistică provoacă normele instituționale, chestionează rolul artistului în societate, și așteptările cu privire la ceea ce constituie medii de arta acceptabile. A primit burse pentru performance de la Fundația Natională pentru Arte și Fundația New York pentru Arte; premiile Bessie și Obie pentru angajamentul față de libertatea de exprimare a artiștilor; Premiul pentru Curaj în Arte Yoko Ono Lennon; premiul Fundației Richard Massey -White Box Arts and Humanities; iar în 2013 a obținut titlul onorific de doctor în Arte Frumoase din partea Univeristății de Arte și Design Colegiul Nova Scotia.

In the context of the international exhibition Good Girls Memory Desire Power presented in MNAC between June 20th – September 29th, curators Bojana Pejic and Olivia Nițiș, the artist Marta Wilson will take part to the international Symposium, Good Girls – Practicing Feminism Here and Now that will take place in MNAC on the 27th and 28th of September. On this occasion the National University of Arts in honored to host a lecture by the artist on October 2nd 2013.

Martha Wilson’s presence in Romania is due to the support of the Embassy of the United States of America.

This lecture chronicles the interwoven stages of Wilson’s creative contributions within the context of early feminist and socially engaged studio practice as well as her dissemination of the work of like-minded individuals through the auspices of Franklin Furnace. Central to the discussion is Wilson’s presence as an agent of transformative change, initially in her artwork and then her facilitation of cultural change through her Directorial presence at Franklin Furnace. Wilson’s selection of 30 projects from 30 years of programming at Franklin Furnace also becomes a self-portrait of sorts as she highlights works that are historically significant for pushing boundaries within exhibition and display culture as well as society at large.

Martha Wilson (b. 1947) is a pioneering feminist artist and gallery director, who over the past four decades created innovative photographic and video works that explore her female subjectivity through role-playing, costume transformations, and “invasions” of other people’s personae. Esteemed for both her solo artistic production and her maverick efforts to champion creative forms that are “vulnerable due to institutional neglect, their ephemeral nature, or politically unpopular content,” she has been described by New York Times critic Holland Cotter as one of “the half-dozen most important people for art in downtown Manhattan in the 1970s.” In 1976 she founded Franklin Furnace, an artist-run space that champions the exploration, promotion and preservation of artist books, temporary installation, performance art, as well as online works. These contemporary avant-garde art forms challenge institutional norms, question the role of the artist in society, and flex expectations about what constitutes acceptable art mediums. She has received fellowships for performance art from the National Endowment for the Arts and the New York Foundation for the Arts; Bessie and Obie awards for commitment to artists’ freedom of expression; a Yoko Ono Lennon Courage Award for the Arts; a Richard Massey Foundation-White Box Arts and Humanities Award; and in 2013 received an Honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design University.
