NEW YORK, N.Y.—The Romanian Cultural Institute in New York and Bard College will present Norman Manea: A Celebration, a tribute to Norman Manea, Francis Flournoy Professor in European Studies and Culture and writer in residence at Bard College. The Romanian writer is a leading contemporary figure in international literature and culture. This intellectually rewarding celebration of Manea’s life and work will bring together editors, publishers, dedicated scholars, friends, colleagues, and collaborators from throughout the world to honor the 75th birthday of one of the most remarkable writers of our time. The two-day symposium will take place from June 27 to 28, 2011 at The Bard Graduate Center Lecture Hall, 38 West 86th Street in New York City. All events are free and open to the public. Introduced by Bard President Leon Botstein and hosted by Corina Şuteu, director of the Romanian Cultural Institute in New York, the event includes presentations, panel discussions, and a documentary film, all covering the trajectory of Manea’s life and exploring the aesthetic and ethical dimensions of his literary work before and after his exile from Romania in 1986.

Participants include Paul Bailey, Robert Boyers, Jonathan Brent, Joseph Cuomo, Luca Formenton, Reginald Gibbons, Edward Hirsch, Edward Kanterian, Silviu Lupescu, Valerie Miles, Carmen Musat, Maria Nadotti, Bogdan-Alexandru Stănescu, and Francine Prose, among others. Norman Manea will make a special appearance.

Acclaimed Romanian émigré writer Norman Manea has been a member of the Bard faculty since 1989 and is the author of 22 volumes of fiction and essays. Among numerous honors, he has received the United States MacArthur and Guggenheim fellowships, The National Jewish Book Award and the Literary Lion Medal by the State Library of New York, has been awarded Italy’s International Nonino Prize for Literature, and been elected a member of the Berlin Academy of Art. His memoir The Hooligan’s Return received France’s Prix Médicis Étranger in 2006. In 2007, he was awarded the Order of Cultural Merit by the President of Romania and in 2008 received honorary degrees in literature from the University of Bucharest and Babes-Bolyai University in Cluj, Romania. In 2009, the French Ministry of Culture conferred the most prestigious title of Commandeur de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres on him. His work has been translated into 20 languages. He lives with his wife in New York City.

New York, 9 mai 2011: Continuând linia sa de programare dedicată graficii şi artelor urbane, Institutul Cultural Român din New York s-a alăturat Festivalului Ideas for the New City organizat de The New Museum pentru a prezenta o expoziţie de bandă desenată românească, al cărei curator este artistul vizual Alexandru Ciubotariu. Expoziţia, deschisă iniţial în cadrul festivalului într-o locaţie neconvenţională din Soho, va fi accesibilă publicului în spaţiul ICRNY în perioada 10 mai - 30 iulie 2011. În paralel cu această expoziţie, ICRNY va găzdui, în data de 10 mai, o conversaţie între artiştii Alexandru Ciubotariu şi Sandu Florea, moderată de Corina Şuteu.

În data de 7 mai, Institutul Cultural Român din New York a prezentat, în cadrul Festivalului Ideas for the New City din New York, un proiect dedicat benzii desenate din România intitulat I Am Not Legend, cuprinzând selecţii din expoziţia „Istoria benzii desenate româneşti”, al cărei curator este Alexandru Ciubotariu. Instalaţia, montată în galeria din Soho a restaurantului Loreley, a avut ca punct de plecare albumul Istoria Benzii Desenate Româneşti 1891-1990, lucrare întocmită şi îngrijită de Alexandru Ciubotariu şi Dodo Niţă şi apărută în 2010 la editura Vellant. Instalaţia a inclus o selecţie de lucrări de Sandu Florea, Puiu Manu sau Livia Rus, dar şi de mai tinerii Matei Branea, Adrian Barbu, Alexandru Ciubotariu, Veronica Solomon sau Jup, prezentate într-un format mărit pe pereţii galeriei, alături de alte 100 lucrări proiectate pe toată durata zilei de sâmbătă. Atât curatorul Alexandru Ciubotariu cât şi Sandu Florea au fost prezenţi în spaţiul galeriei pentru a răspunde întrebărilor vizitatorilor. „This is sooo cool”, au comentat mulţi dintre cei care au văzut expoziţia, angajând un dialog extrem de viu cu cei doi creatori despre banda desenată din România.

În continuarea evenimentului din Soho, ICRNY va găzdui în data de 10 mai, odată cu instalarea expoziţiei în spaţiul ICRNY, o întâlnire între Sandu Florea, cunoscutul artist româno-american de bandă desenată şi Alexandru Ciubotariu - Pisica Pătrată. Discuţia va explora trecutul şi prezentul benzii desenate în România, revirimentul acestui gen după 1989, dar şi condiţia graficianului în România contemporană. Conversaţia va fi moderată de Corina Şuteu, directorul ICRNY.

Festivalul Ideas for the New City, organizat de The New Museum din New York în perioada 4-8 mai, a urmărit, prin cele peste 200 de proiecte propuse, să facă apel la puterea comunităţii creative de a imagina un nou oraş şi de a explora ideile menite să-l contureze. ICRNY s-a alăturat acestei conversaţii oferind o perspectivă diferită asupra rolului pe care artele îl au în peisajul socio-urban aflat în rapidă schimbare în multe dintre ţările est europene.

Expoziţia I Am Not Legend va fi deschisă publicului în perioada 10 mai – 30 iulie 2011 în spaţiul Institutului Cultural Român din New York.

Alexandru Ciubotariu (n. 1979) a publicat grafică de revistă şi carte şi numeroase benzi desenate în revistele Mini-Azi, Jurnalul SF, Pif Surprize, 2000 Plus, Play, Apropo TV, Business Magazin, Doxi, Pipo, Adevărul, Esquire, Omagiu, Arhitectura etc. A semnat şase cărţi de benzi desenate şi un album de street art (Pisica Pătrată, editura Vellant, 2009), primul din România. Pentru Romfilatelia a desenat mai multe serii de timbre editate în sute de mii de exemplare. A participat la concursuri BD şi a câştigat numeroase premii. În 2005 este invitat de onoare la Salonul Internaţional al Benzii Desenate din România, „BD Constanţa ‘05”. A fost invitat să participe la expoziţii în Franţa, Polonia, Cehia, Maroc, Grecia, Serbia, Portugalia, Ungaria, cea mai importantă fiind expoziţia de la Muzeul Benzii Desenate din Bruxelles, Belgia. Stabilit în prezent în Bucureşti, lucrează ca grafician, colaborând cu diverse edituri şi publicaţii.

Sandu Florea (n. 1946) a debutat încă din studenţie, publicând în 1968 serialul Năzdrăvăniile lui Păcală în revista Luminiţa. A semnat nouă cărţi de BD, din cele 50 apărute în perioada comunistă, a desenat primele BD-western româneşti, adaptând romanele lui Nicolae Frînculescu, iar în 1990 a editat împreună cu acesta revistele de benzi desenate Carusel şi Proteus. La sfârşitul lui 1991, Sandu Florea emigrează împreună cu familia în Statele Unite. În aprilie 1992 debutează la cea mai importantă editură de benzi desenate din SUA, Marvel Comics. De atunci Sandu Florea a desenat aproape 300 de benzi desenate, ilustrând aventurile a aproape tututor super-eroilor americani: Conan the Barbarian, X-Force, Dr. Strange, The Executioner, Thunder Strike, Blade, Buffy – the Vampire Slayer, Insane Clown Posse, Generation X, Spiderman Unlimited, Elektra, X-treme X-men, Hawkeye, Batman R.I.P. etc. În prezent, artistul româno-american a devenit un nume inconturnabil în cataloagele marilor edituri de benzi desenate americane, Marvel, DC Comics, Dark Horse ş.a.
